A deadly crash in Brevard County shut down Interstate 95 in both directions for part of Monday morning with northbound lanes only reopening after six hours.

Florida Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at about 9:04 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 228 in Mims.

It involved a 2007 tractor trailer driving north in the outside lane that struck a CMTI truck that was parked in the outside lane with its arrow board and lights activated to warn approaching drivers of a vehicle fire incident ahead.

FHP stated the semi driver failed to slow or move over for the CMTI truck and struck its rear causing both vehicles to collide with the outside shoulder guardrail.

The male adult driver of the CMTI truck was pronounced dead at the scene while a 42-year-old St. Cloud man who was a passenger in the truck was airlifted to Lake Monroe Hospital with serious injuries.

The tractor trailer driver, a 63-year-old Orlando man, remained on the scene without injuries.

The accident scene and responding vehicles created a roadblock for both southbound and northbound lanes. Northbound traffic was being diverted at State Road 46 until just after 3 p.m.

Southbound traffic had also been detoured at County Road 5-A at mile marker 231, but all lanes of southbound traffic opened up by 11:30 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
