Federal offices aren’t the only ones closed today, Christmas Eve.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Florida state offices also will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24.

The recent decision comes more than a month after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Dec. 18 making Dec. 24 and Dec. 26 federal holidays and giving federal workers a five-day weekend.

Florida state offices closed Christmas Eve

In an email from the Department of Management Services, DeSantis directed DMS to close all executive state buildings on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, in addition to the previously announced dates.

What Florida employees won’t be working on Christmas Eve?

“All eligible employees released from duty on the designated days will be granted paid administrative leave,” the email said.

“Because there are essential services that the state must continue, those employees who are required to work on these days will be permitted to take an equivalent amount of administrative leave by June 30, 2026.”

What other dates will Florida state offices be closed?

In addition to the last-minute announcement making Christmas Eve a holiday, state workers also will be off Christmas Day, Dec. 25, and on Friday, Dec. 26.

With the addition of Dec. 24, this will give state workers a five-day weekend.

Why are Florida workers off the day after Christmas?

On Nov. 17, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis added three additional holidays for state employees, the day before Thanksgiving, the day after Christmas and the day after New Year’s.

“Our state employees have worked hard throughout the year,” DeSantis said in November. “I hope they enjoy additional time off with loved ones and friends this holiday season.”

Yes, Christmas is included in the list of paid holidays in Florida for state agencies.

Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday?

Yes, but only after Trump issued an executive order on Dec. 18 saying federal departments and agencies, with some exceptions, “shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, and Friday, Dec. 26, 2025.”
