Three Seminole County Public Schools students died by suicide this week, prompting district officials to remind parents about services and trained counselors available on campus.
The three students were a 15-year-old from Lyman High School, a 15-year-old from Winter Springs High School and a 16-year-old from Hagerty High School, a district spokesperson confirmed Thursday morning.
“During this difficult time, we want to remind our families and students that support is available for anyone who may need it. As a school community, we want every student to know that they are never alone and that help is always available,” the district’s message to families read.
The district also said each school campus has “compassionate, trained mental health professionals” that are available to provide support, guidance and care.
Depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents, according to the World Health Organization, and suicide is now the third leading cause of death among those aged 15–29 years old.
Marni Stahlman, the president and CEO of the Mental Health Association of Central Florida, said there needs to be more education on utilizing mental health care, as many kids don’t understand how to use those services or feel a stigma about doing so.
“We have to make this investment. Children are literally dying,” she said.
The three deaths so close together adds to sense of tragedy, but suicide is a widespread problem and kids need to know there’s help within reach, she added
