Next month’s roster of activities at the Pine Island Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following programs are free to the public.
Adult Programs
DIY Plant Pots
Noon Wednesday, Jan. 7
2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 24
Decorate your very own mini terracotta pot and take home some dirt and seeds for your new addition. Dress for mess, as paints may stain. All materials provided. Patrons may only register for one class in this series. Registration is required.
Puzzle Race
1-4:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10
Do you love jigsaw puzzles? Teams of up to four people will compete in a 500-piece puzzle race. Complimentary refreshments will be provided and prizes will be awarded to the winning team. Participants may bring up to two puzzle trays. If you do not have a team and are open to joining one, you may be paired up with others. Sponsored by the Friends of the Pine Island Public Library. Registration is required.
Tech Thursdays: One-on-One Help
2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15
Need help with a phone, tablet or laptop? Are you looking to gain basic computer skills? We can help with a 15-minute, one-on-one technology help session. Bring your own fully charged device and any passwords or use a library computer to receive direct instruction. Registration is required.
Holocaust Survivor Stories
2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17
Presented in partnership with the Holocaust Museum and Cohen Education Center, this powerful program features a firsthand account from Shelley Lieb, daughter of Holocaust survivors Marta and Mayer Zelcer. Join us as she shares their stories and fulfills a call to make sure the tragedy of the Holocaust continues to be told. Registration is required.
Book Discussion: “Broken Country” by Clare Leslie Hall
1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20
Beth and Frank are a happily married couple, but some deadly secrets from the past begin resurfacing. When Beth’s first love re-appears after a tragic accident, she is forced to confront her past and face the future. Sponsored by the Friends of the Pine Island Public Library. Copies of the book are available at the service desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
Children’s Programs
Preschool Playdate: Winter Fun
10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 8
Join old friends and new and enjoy this fun, winter-themed playdate. Enjoy a story, songs, games, crafts and activities that celebrate the cooler season. For children ages 2-5 years with a caregiver.
Lego Club
4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13
Join us for fun, hands-on, brick-building activities. All materials are provided, just bring your creativity. For children ages 6-11 years.
Preschool Fairytale S.T.E.M.
10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 15
Enjoy learning about favorite fairytale characters through stories, songs, games, crafts and fairytale-themed S.T.E.M. activities. For children ages 2-5 years with a caregiver.
Family Storytime
10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 29
For children through age 5 years with caregiver. Enjoy books, rhymes, songs and activities. This fun and engaging program offers kids a chance to make friends and build skills through stories, music and movement. Caregivers participate with their children while learning helpful early literacy strategies and tips to continue at home.
Storytime and Author Event
with Deana Plaskon
4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28
Join us for a special storytime and meet author Deana Plaskon, a St. James City resident. She is the creator of the children’s book series “Bella and Bird the Emotion Explorers.” Inspired by what her horse, Bella, endured with Hurricane Ian on Pine Island, Deana wrote this children’s book series to help children navigate big emotions with courage, hope and heart. Enjoy a read-aloud, calming activities, coloring and a meet and greet with the author. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration is required.
