Two employees of the US airline Spirit Airlines are facing charges of theft following an incident at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. According to the investigation, a 49-year-old supervisor and a 56-year-old colleague allegedly stole a Louis Vuitton designer handbag in October 2025, which a passenger had left behind at the gate.

The person affected only noticed the missing bag, worth approximately $500, after boarding their flight to Austin, Texas. Extensive review of the airport’s surveillance cameras ultimately led to the identification of the two employees who initially placed the found item in a drawer at the check-in counter and later stole it from the security area in a personal backpack.

Additional reports from local law enforcement, specifically the Broward Sheriff’s Office, indicate that the suspects acted systematically. Video footage shows the supervisor inspecting the contents of the bag before repacking the items and ultimately smuggling the bag out of the terminal. The arrests were made in November, with charges ranging from simple theft to misappropriation of property valued at up to $749. Spirit Airlines stated it is fully cooperating with authorities and has already taken internal disciplinary action against the personnel involved. The two suspects were released on bail following their arrest, with one of them having already pleaded not guilty.

The aviation industry has strict protocols for handling lost and found items, which stipulate immediate documentation and forwarding to the airport’s central lost and found office. The fact that direct ground staff of the airline are involved in this case has led to considerable criticism of internal oversight mechanisms. Experts point out that passenger trust in the integrity of employees is a critical asset, especially for low-cost carriers. Since airports like Fort Lauderdale are among Spirit Airlines’ main hubs, the incident has received significant media attention in the US and the UK, despite the rarity of such offenses committed by staff.

The case also underscores the importance of comprehensive video surveillance at international airports. Security authorities are using this technology not only for counterterrorism but also increasingly to investigate property crimes within the busy terminal areas. Police and airlines advise travelers to keep a close eye on their valuables, especially during the hectic boarding process, and to immediately report any losses to both the airline and airport security. Meanwhile, the investigation into the exact whereabouts of the bag’s contents continues, while Florida law enforcement prepares for the trial next year.
