MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A century-old family business in Martin County is picking up the pieces after a targeted smash-and-grab burglary early Sunday morning. Two suspects broke through the glass doors of Sewell Hardware in Stuart, making off with thousands of dollars in DeWalt power tools in under a minute.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek explained that the nature of the burglary suggests the suspects were not acting on impulse. “We don’t have any real solid leads to work on. And we’re out there again every night trying to do our patrols and prevent this from happening. But these individuals clearly knew what they were targeting. They’ve done their homework, and they got in and out rapidly,” Budensiek said.

The primary clue currently available to detectives is a distinct Gucci jacket worn by one of the suspects, which features the phrase Blind for Love. Despite the store’s location near several other businesses, no other solid leads have surfaced.

Sheriff Budensiek emphasized the anonymity of the suspects due to their careful movements. “What’s in that video is what we have, and I have nothing further than that. So, we can’t tell whether they’re a white male, black male, Hispanic male. We just don’t know. So, we’re hoping that somebody identifies either the jacket or saw something that night that kind of stuck out in their mind,” he stated.

Sewell Hardware has been family-owned in Martin County for over 100 years, and the timing of the theft has struck a chord with local law enforcement. Sheriff Budensiek noted the personal impact such a crime has on the local community.

“We’re offended by this because this is a Martin County business. They’ve been here for a really long time. And when they get hit with the significant amount of loss that they have experienced, it really does hurt them, especially right before Christmas.”
