Love, compassion and generosity are all hallmarks of the holiday season.

This year, the Burgher family could use a lot of that.

Ritchie Burgher, you see, is one of the popular Freebee drivers on Key Biscayne.

Just seven days before Christmas, Ritchie and his family were forced to flee the night with only the clothes on their back as their apartment in North Miami caught fire.

Now, former Key Biscayne Mayor Mike Davey is hoping residents can share of their heartwarming generosity by contributing to the GoFundMe account he has set up to provide help for the family.

“Ritchie and Barbara Burgher are two of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to know,” Davey wrote on the social media post. “Many of you may remember Barbara as my father’s caregiver during the last 3 years he was with us. Her dedication and care for him were incredible.

“Her husband, Ritchie, is a wonderful person. He works as a Freebee driver on Key Biscayne and was a blessing to my Dad in his final years. They have two sons, one of whom has special needs due to an illness he had some years back.”

It’s been a difficult holiday season for the family in more ways than one, Davey explained.

“Barbara is currently between assignments as a caregiver, so that makes what has happened even more stressful,” he said. “They are looking for a place to live and need even the basics this holiday season.

“I would ask each of you to do what you can to help these incredible people get back on their feet. Even as they go through this difficult time, their thoughts have been with others who are less fortunate. Please help if you can,” Davey pleaded.

As of midday Friday, $2.159 was raised with the goal of $4,500.
