Police said they tried to pull over the car at first. As the driver tried to evade officers, he ended up hitting a car and crashing into an SUV.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One person died, and multiple people were injured after a car crash incident took place when St. Pete police tried to pull over a speeding vehicle.

Around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, police said a Dodge Challenger was headed east. As the driver was seen by officers, they attempted to pull him over. Officers said they did not pursue.

Police said, the driver, instead of stopping, did a U-turn across Gandy Boulevard in front of WinDerby, hitting another car in the process. Nobody was hurt at this moment.

After the first collision, officers say, the driver continued west until he hit an SUV on Martin Luther King Jr. Street North, under Gandy Boulevard.

Four people inside the SUV, as well as the driver of the Challenger, were taken to a hospital nearby. The driver of the Challenger died as a result of the crash, police said.
