FSU football is “expected” to hire John Garrett to be their next general manager, according to Ira Schofell of On3.

He has spent the past two seasons as Duke’s general manager of player personnel, helping build a roster that won the ACC in 2025. Prior to his two seasons with the Blue Devils, he was FSU’s director of scouting for offense in 2022 and 2023, when they went 34-4 and nearly made the College Football Playoff.

Garrett has worked in numerous roles at both the collegiate and professional levels, including serving as Lafayette’s head coach from 2017 to 2021. He also served as offensive coordinator for Oregon State (2014) and Richmond (2016), tight ends coach and passing game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys (2011-12), and wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2013).

He played wide receiver in college, graduating from Princeton in 1988 and earning Second Team All-Ivy honors in 1987. He signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 1988. He also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Garrett started his coaching career with the Bengals in 1995, serving as offensive assistant and wide receivers coach. He left in 1999 to become quarterbacks coach of the Arizona Cardinals. His first college job was with Virginia in 2004, with him starting as their wide receivers coach and becoming assistant head coach in 2007 before he returned to the NFL with the Cowboys in 2008.
