St. Pete PD said the driver accused of speeding did not properly use their seat belt, had an active warrant and had a suspended license.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One person died, and multiple people were injured after a car crash took place involving a speeding vehicle driven by someone with a suspended license, according to St. Pete police.

Officers say this happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when a driver in a Mitsubishi Outlander was going northbound on Dr Martin Luther King Jr Street North, crossing North Frontage Road and crossed a green light traffic signal.

Meanwhile, a blue Dodge Charger driven by 31-year-old Izell Shelby was going westbound at a reported high rate of speed on North Frontage Road.

Shelby did not stop at the oncoming red light and hit the Mitsubishi in the intersection, officials said.

Shelby was later taken to the hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The other driver and three passengers were also taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

St. Pete PD said Shelby did not properly use their seat belt, had an active warrant and had a suspended license.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
