We’re less than a week away from the college football world being turned on its head when the transfer portal officially opens and teams from around the country attempt to become the Indiana Hoosiers of the 2026 season.
It is set up to be the most highly contested portal of all time, thanks to over a dozen of the nation’s top quarterback prospects expected to transfer.
Near the top of that list is former five-star recruit and dual-threat QB DJ Lagway, who will be leaving the Florida Gators program after two years to try to find the best place to develop for his eventual entrance to the NFL Draft.
Lagway has one of the highest ceilings of any QB in the nation, and he showed that at times in Florida. With a rocket of an arm and equally quick legs that make him elusive anywhere on the field, when at his best, Lagway was a superstar. At his worst, though, he made unforced errors, held on the ball too long, and struggled to be a reliable centerpiece.
Still, his talent is undeniable, and he will have a long list of suitors knocking down his door when the transfer portal officially opens on January 2nd of the new year.
While the favorites appear to be the likes of College Football Playoff contenders Miami, Oregon, and the aforementioned Indiana, there’s one school on the rise that I think not only can develop Lagway but skyrocket him into next year’s Heisman Award ceremony.

Prediction: DJ Lagway (Florida) signs with the Vanderbilt Commodores
Yes, Vanderbilt.
A few years ago, people would have laughed if you said the Indiana Hoosiers would go undefeated and have the best quarterback in the country.
Now, with the new NIL era, schools with deep pockets (the Commodores have that nowadays) who can keep their head coaches (Clark Lea just signed a huge six-year extension) are king.
Lea has shown what he can do with a playmaking quarterback in Diego Pavia, and Lagway could enter an offense and scheme where he won’t only feel comfortable but can thrive. In a difficult SEC, Vanderbilt can’t get content in their success, and needs to push for a significant portal period if they want to make it to the College Football Playoff.
When he first signed with Florida, Lagway wouldn’t have thought about Vanderbilt twice. Now, though, it might be his perfect destination.
