Authorities are searching for a driver who fled after a Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy stopped the stolen car they were driving in and opened fire.
It happened just before 6 p.m. on Sunday after the deputy received an alert about a stolen vehicle in the area.
The deputy found the vehicle at Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 95th Street and conducted a traffic stop.
“As the Deputy approached the vehicle, an altercation ensued, and the Deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.
The driver fled, and the car was found nearby shortly after. Authorities said a firearm was found inside, and the subject is still at large.
The deputy was not hurt in the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has assumed the investigation, as is standard practice when an officer fires their weapon.
If you have any information regarding this incident or the subject’s location, you’re urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
