If you own a historic building or home with windows that need attention — what do you do; replace them?

“You’re gonna replace something that will last for 100 years with something that will last for 15 years?” said John Daly, a president emeritus of the Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village, Inc. “Why would you

do this?”

At Green Gables, historic preservation is the priority, and the organization would like to spread the word. It has scheduled a workshop called Windows are the Eyes of Your House. It is an educational workshop on preserving and maintaining windows for longevity.

Constantly changing aluminum windows costs a lot more than what a good craftsman would charge you to take the historic window apart and rebuild it.

Green Gables organization is in the process of restoring its Queen Anne style house that was built in 1896 and was one of the first houses in Melbourne to have electricity.

The workshop, conducted by Austin Historical, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 10 at Green Gables at 1501 S. Harbor City Blvd. in Melbourne.
