There will be an increased police presence and safety measures in place in a popular nightlife area in downtown Fort Lauderdale following a shooting over the weekend that left five people hospitalized, city officials said.

The “increased and highly visible law enforcement presence” in the Himmarshee area is being put in place ahead of New Year’s Eve and the large number of people expected to celebrate in the area, Fort Lauderdale city officials said Monday.

“The City is also actively working on a multifaceted revitalization plan to address issues related to late night activity in the Himmarshee Village Historic District,” the statement read.

The safety measures are also in response to the shooting that happened in the area around 2 a.m. Sunday and left five people hospitalized.

Police have released few details about the shooting, which happened near the 300 block of Southwest 2nd Street.

Officials haven’t released the identities of the victims or their conditions, and gave no information about a possible suspect.

The shooting remains under investigation.
