PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — As a cold front sweeps through South Florida, counties across the Treasure Coast, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach counties are activating emergency shelters to protect vulnerable residents from overnight temperatures expected to dip into the 30s. Here’s a county-by-county breakdown of shelter availability as of Monday afternoon.

St. Lucie County – Shelter Open

With temperatures expected to plunge below 40 degrees for at least four consecutive hours on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, an emergency cold weather shelter will open at Percy Peek Gym, 2902 Avenue D, to protect vulnerable residents from the dangerous chill.

The shelter, operated by In the Image of Christ in partnership with St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce, will open at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, and remain available until 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1.

Free transportation available

Area Regional Transit (ART) will provide free rides to the shelter from the following locations between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.:

Indian River County – Shelter to open

The Indian River County Emergency Services Department announced on Monday that a cold weather shelter is expected to open, but has yet to release further details. More information on the shelter opening will be forthcoming.

Palm Beach County – No Shelter yet

County officials state shelters typically open only when temperatures fall below 40 degrees for an extended period. However, no details of a cold weather shelter were released as of Monday afternoon.

Okeechobee County – No Shelter yet

As of Monday afternoon, the county has yet to release information on opening a cold weather shelter.

Martin County – No Shelter yet

As of Monday afternoon, the county has yet to release information on opening a cold weather shelter.

For those braving the cold at home, residents are urged to dress in layers, keep pets indoors, check on elderly family and neighbors, and use heaters safely. This means never use generators or grills indoors.
