TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) – Although he would like to do away with property taxes, a North Central Florida state senator says they are a necessary evil.
While many Republicans at the statehouse are pushing for major reforms to local property taxes, Senator Stan McClain has some definite concerns because property taxes pay for a wide range of public services.
“I don’t know if we can just say ‘hey, you know, we’re gonna completely get rid of it’, to me, that would take a longer period of time…We’re not gonna have any more local government services,” said McClain.
McClain points out that almost any property tax reform the legislature passes will have to be approved by voters.
The only exception would be to prohibit local governments from raising their current millage rates.
