Raised in 12 different states, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with both violin and trombone, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11.<\/p>\n After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps, Kottke joined the Navy underage, to be underwater, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak, a diesel submarine.<\/p>\n Discharged in 1964, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP \u201cTwelve String Blues,\u201d recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder, for the Scholar’s tiny Oblivion label. After sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey, Kottke was signed to Fahey’s Takoma label, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records.<\/p>\n Kottke’s 1971 major-label debut, \u201cMudlark,\u201d positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer\/songwriter vein, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer.<\/p>\n Still, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol, as records like 1972’s \u201cGreenhouse\u201d and 1973’s live \u201cMy Feet Are Smiling\u201d and \u201cIce Water\u201d found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.<\/p>\n With 1975’s \u201cChewing Pine,\u201d Kottke reached the U.S. Top 30 for the second time; he also gained an international following thanks to his continuing tours in Europe and Australia.<\/p>\n Kottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the University of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.<\/p>\n The Palladium<\/p>\n Elona Krasavtseva and Alex Boyd<\/p>\n ST. He grew up in Ireland at a time when there was a resurgence of interest in Irish music and when the singer-songwriter boom had taken off in North America. Both of these genres would ultimately influence his own music.<\/p>\n Nolan\u2019s song-writing skills denote a deep sensitivity. He has a gift for storytelling. One of his songs, \u201cNorth of the Rio Grande,\u201d was published in a school textbook in Norway. Another, \u201cFar from their Home\u201d, is in the National Archives of Ireland and National Library of Canada. It tells a harrowing story about Grosse Isle, an island burial ground in the St. Lawrence River near Quebec City for victims of the Irish Famine. The song was published in Sing Out! magazine.<\/p>\n Nolan is based in St. Pete Beach, where he has lived since 1993. He has been featured several times on WMNF \u201cLive\u201d in Tampa. He has played at many festivals in Florida, among them the Sertoma Ranch Celtic Festival, Florida Folk Festival, Gamble Rogers Fest, and Wings and Strings.
