Here\u2019s how high it\u2019ll go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Florida is set to join roughly 20 other states that are increasing their minimum wages in 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/states-raise-minimum-wage-2026\/story?id=128753540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/states-raise-minimum-wage-2026\/story?id=128753540\">according to ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Many of these states are expected to boost their minimum wages on New Year\u2019s Day \u2014 the first day of the new year. However, Florida\u2019s will take a bit longer to come to fruition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That\u2019s because Florida\u2019s minimum wage is automatically set to increase each September thanks to a change approved by voters around five years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">More specifically, Florida voters narrowly passed Amendment 2 in 2020, kicking off a series of minimum wage hikes that will actually end in 2026. The schedule is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>YearMinimum WageSept. 30, 2022$11Sept. 30, 2023$12Sept. 30, 2024$13Sept. 30, 2025$14Sept. 30, 2026$15<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">As a result, the minimum wage was most recently increased to $14 starting on Sept. 30, 2025. This also means that Sept. 30, 2026, is the last scheduled minimum wage hike. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">From then on, the minimum wage is set to be adjusted annually for inflation, as it originally had been since 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Prior to the passage of Amendment 2, the state\u2019s minimum wage sat at $8.46.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">[BELOW: John Morgan applauds minimum wage increase in Florida]<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Amendment 2 was spearheaded by Morgan &amp; Morgan founder John Morgan, who acted as the chairperson for the political committee behind the amendment, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=70115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=70115\">Florida For A Fair Wage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forthepeople.com\/blog\/john-morgans-next-mission-fair-minimum-wage-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forthepeople.com\/blog\/john-morgans-next-mission-fair-minimum-wage-florida\/\">As his law firm explains<\/a>, Morgan spent millions of dollars in support of the proposal, which he termed a \u201cmoral, ethical and religious\u201d fight to abolish so-called \u201cslave wages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The amendment ultimately eked out a victory, achieving just over the minimum threshold of votes \u2014 60% \u2014 needed to pass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">But on the flip side, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flchamber.com\/wagemandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flchamber.com\/wagemandate\/\">opponents of the proposal<\/a> warned that it could push higher labor costs onto small businesses and families, as well as make it harder for young workers to find entry-level positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">[BELOW: Critics say Amendment 2 could hurt Florida\u2019s economy]<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">UCF Economist Sean Snaith told News 6 after last year\u2019s minimum wage hike that price floors like this can actually result in reduced hours and benefits for lower-income workers, as well as unemployment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhen the minimum wage is set above the market wage, that is going to create a surplus of labor in the labor market that may or may not manifest itself as higher unemployment,\u201d UCF Economist Sean Snaith told News 6 after last year\u2019s minimum wage hike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">[BELOW: See an example graph showing the potential impact of a minimum wage]<\/p>\n<p>Breaking News Alerts<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kiwhtN\">Get breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by WKMG ClickOrlando &#8211;
