ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando’s final college bowl game of 2025 took place on New Year’s Eve at Camping World Stadium, drawing thousands of fans for the Cheez-It Bowl — and for many, the decision to spend the day at the stadium instead of downtown Orlando was an easy one.

Fans from both Michigan and Texas packed into the stadium hours before kickoff; some arriving as early as three hours ahead of the game. While team loyalties were divided between Michigan and Texas, many attendees agreed on one thing: The stadium offered the better New Year’s Eve atmosphere.

“There’s nothing like being at the stadium on game day,” said one fan.

Others echoed that sentiment, saying the energy and tradition of college football made Camping World Stadium the obvious choice.

For longtime Orlando residents, however, the decision was also influenced by changes downtown.

Some fans said downtown Orlando no longer feels as inviting as it once did, pointing to the closure of Church Street and a shift in nightlife options. Several said they now prefer areas like Winter Park or other surrounding communities.

Safety concerns were also top of mind for some, following mass shootings in downtown Orlando in 2022 and 2024.

One fan said attending large New Year’s Eve events anywhere comes with risk, adding that people ultimately have to decide whether they’re comfortable with the safety measures in place.

Downtown Orlando has continued to face challenges as new regulations impact nightlife and entertainment options. One visitor said even those who chose to stay downtown found it difficult to find places to eat or things to do, describing the experience as different from what they expected.

As city leaders work to balance security and nightlife in the downtown area, fans at Camping World Stadium said their focus remained on football — closing out the year with the Cheez-It Bowl instead.
