In recent statements, DeSantis has proposed immediate relief through average $1,000 rebates for more than 5 million homesteaded properties while advocating for a constitutional amendment to abolish the taxes entirely. The long-term goal would require voter approval on the 2026 ballot, potentially making Florida the first state with no income tax and no property taxes on owner-occupied homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost like they have to pay rent to the government just to be able to enjoy their property. And that\u2019s wrong. We need to do something about it,\u201d DeSantis said, echoing comments he has made throughout 2025.<\/p>\n

The governor has criticized local governments for ballooning budgets amid rising property values, noting that statewide property tax revenues have surged from $32 billion in 2019 to $56 billion this year. He argues that homeowners should not serve as an ongoing revenue source for local spending.<\/p>\n

DeSantis has called for a single, clear constitutional amendment on the 2026 ballot rather than multiple competing proposals advanced by the Florida House, which include options like expanded homestead exemptions and phased eliminations. He warned that fragmented measures could confuse voters and fail to achieve the required 60% approval threshold.<\/p>\n

Supporters, including some online commentators, have urged expanding the idea nationally: \u201cDo it in all 50 states!\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics, however, warn that eliminating homestead property taxes \u2014 a key funding source for schools, law enforcement and local services \u2014 could drive up home prices by 7% to 9%, strain public budgets and shift burdens to renters, businesses and non-homestead properties.<\/p>\n

DeSantis has floated using state surpluses to backfill losses for rural counties and increasing taxes on tourists, commercial properties or second homes to offset revenue gaps.<\/p>\n

As the 2026 legislative session approaches, the debate highlights growing pressure on policymakers to address soaring housing costs and tax burdens for homeowners.<\/p>\n
