Linda Bohacek said at the heart of who she is, is a woman who would much rather volunteer than work. Although she has been on the island for 12 years with her husband, Bo, she wonders if that is enough time to classify herself as a Pine Islander. <\/p>\n
She credits her time as a Matlacha Hooker with the realization that the island is her forever home.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m just finishing my stint as madame,\u201d Bohacek said of her time in leadership.<\/p>\n
The organization impressed her from the instant she became aware of its existence, which she said took shape for her at the Waterfront Restaurant. Her love for Pine Island, she believes, is most obvious in her contribution to the participation she has had as a Matlacha Hooker. The organization does much for local island businesses, she said, with emphasis on the annual Luau.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m part of the luau solicitation or canvassing group. We go from door to door and we see all the businesses and that is really fun. We\u2019ve gotten to know so many people and so many businesses. I guess that\u2019s the way I\u2019ve learned so much about the island-meeting business owners and individuals,\u201d Bohacek said.<\/p>\n
The annual island Luau is a major fundraiser for the Beacon of HOPE, she said. The Beacon Bites Program is another avenue of involvement for the Hookers for which she is very proud, as well as transportation to doctor visits, explaining the importance of fundraising for the Beacon in particular. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m pretty involved in a lot of different areas-not just being the madame but co-chairing other events like the kids fishing derby. I don\u2019t just run the meetings, I\u2019m kind of a hands-on madame,\u201d Bohacek said.<\/p>\n
Even those who are not here year round can find things to do with the Hookers, she said, as there are worthwhile activities throughout the year. <\/p>\n
The explanation of Pine Island to someone who has never heard of it, she said, is simply, the old Florida.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat kind of laid-back, no rush, very eclectic and diverse-you meet so many different people from so many different states and backgrounds,\u201d Bohacek said.<\/p>\n
Her greatest wish for Pine Island, she said, is that folks would continue to support the well being of the community. Overall, this community laid claim to Bohacek, admittedly, when she said yes to the Matlacha Hookers, one of the most successful non-profit organizations found on Pine Island. <\/p>\n
