{"id":102127,"date":"2026-01-01T10:25:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T10:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/102127\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T10:25:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T10:25:12","slug":"here-are-all-the-new-florida-laws-taking-effect-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/102127\/","title":{"rendered":"Here are all the new Florida laws taking effect today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 This year, over 200 new Florida laws were approved as part of the latest Legislative session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">While the vast majority of these laws have already taken effect, there are a select few that kicked off starting on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Only three of these new laws will go into effect in full. However, a couple of other new laws that already took effect will have some of their provisions finally take effect, as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD 2025<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The list of laws that took effect on Jan. 1, 2026, is as follows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=80848&amp;SessionId=105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=80848&amp;SessionId=105\">HB 255<\/a> \u2014 Animal Cruelty Database<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">House Bill 255 establishes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/05\/28\/gov-desantis-holds-news-conference-at-florida-animal-rescue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/05\/28\/gov-desantis-holds-news-conference-at-florida-animal-rescue\/\">harsher penalties for animal cruelty<\/a>, which includes intentionally torturing an animal to death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/florida\/2025\/07\/01\/here-are-all-the-new-florida-laws-taking-effect-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/florida\/2025\/07\/01\/here-are-all-the-new-florida-laws-taking-effect-today\/\">the legislation first kicked off in July<\/a>, the law requires the FDLE to post a searchable database on its website as of Jan. 1, 2026, with the names of those who have been convicted of animal cruelty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Dubbed \u201cDexter\u2019s Law,\u201d the legislation was brought about after a shelter dog named \u201cDexter\u201d was adopted and later found beheaded in Fort DeSoto Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=81267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=81267\">HB 655<\/a> \u2014 Pet Insurance<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">House Bill 655 amends state statutes to include pet insurance in the definition of \u201cproperty insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">More specifically, the law includes coverage for accidents involving pets or when pets fall ill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The law also seeks a myriad of changes to disclosure requirements and regulations, such as mandating that pet insurance agents avoid misrepresenting wellness programs as pet insurance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=80651&amp;SessionId=105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=80651&amp;SessionId=105\">SB 158<\/a> \u2014 Breast Examinations<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Senate Bill 158 prohibits the state group insurance program from imposing any cost-sharing liability for diagnostic and supplemental breast examinations in health benefit plans\/contracts for state workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=81458&amp;SessionId=105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=81458&amp;SessionId=105\">SB 944<\/a> \u2014 Insurance Claims<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Senate Bill 944 reduces the timeframe for a health insurer or HMO to submit claims to a licensed psychologist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">More specifically, the law reduces that timeframe from 30 months to 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The law first took effect on July 1, though it applies to claims for services provided starting on Jan. 1, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=82310&amp;SessionId=105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=82310&amp;SessionId=105\">SB 1808<\/a> \u2014 Patient Refunds<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Senate Bill 1808 requires health care practitioners to refund a patient\u2019s overpayment within 30 days.<\/p>\n<p
