FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) – The temperature doesn\u2019t drop down this low in South Florida very often but that didn\u2019t stop crowds from enjoying New Year\u2019s Eve to celebrate the start of a brand new year outdoors.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s cold \u2014 by South Florida standards \u2014 and residents, including the little ones, made sure to bundle up as they braved the elements.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike it used to be so hot, I didn\u2019t want to go outside, but now it\u2019s super cold,\u201d said Michael Lalo.<\/p>\n
In Fort Lauderdale, Fletcher Schrodt and his neighbors invested in a fire pit to stay warm for the evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe use the fire pit a little bit just for fun, but tonight, we\u2019re gonna use the fire pit to stay warm,\u201d said Schrodt.<\/p>\n
For most of the year, the investment would be a novelty, but on this New Year\u2019s Eve, it\u2019s a necessity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe sit out here every night. It started to get chilly so we decided to buy the fire pit and now it\u2019s like a neighborhood staple, it\u2019s like moths to a light, everybody comes over here,\u201d said area resident Mike Altieri.<\/p>\n
Meantime, along Las Olas Boulevard, residents came prepared for the weather with their best winter fits.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause we\u2019re going to a fancy restaurant and I can\u2019t wear a sweater, got to wear something cute, you know?\u201d said one resident.<\/p>\n
Some people who are visiting South Florida for the New Year said they loved the brisk weather compared to back home.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe love Florida. So we come down very often, might be a bit cold but for us, it\u2019s a lot warmer than what it is at home so we\u2019re good,\u201d said a tourist.<\/p>\n
The chilly temperatures are expected to carry through the rest of the week before starting to warm up over the weekend.<\/p>\n
