FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. \u2014 A 17-year-old boy has died after he was shot late New Year\u2019s Eve in Fort Lauderdale. <\/p>\n
The shooting was reported shortly before midnight along North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard.<\/p>\n
According to Fort Lauderdale police, the victim was hospitalized after the shooting. Loved ones who went to the scene afterward told Local 10 News that the teen, who they identified as Joshua Gipson, Jr., has since died.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like I lost a child, and that\u2019s not even my child,\u201d one woman said. \u201cThat\u2019s my best friend\u2019s child, which you know I\u2019ve grown to love him and know him.\u201d<\/p>\n
The woman said Gipson wanted to go to Virginia Tech next year.<\/p>\n
One witness told Local 10 News that two people were shooting at each other in the area and it appears the teen was not involved but was shot in the crossfire. <\/p>\n
Gipson\u2019s family received a call that he was shot and they rushed over to the hospital. <\/p>\n
At first, they thought he would be OK, but he didn\u2019t make it. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a good boy, good person, a good big brother, loving, caring, everything. Literally he\u2019s like a ball of sunshine,\u201d one woman said. <\/p>\n
She said Gipson went out with his friends for New Year\u2019s Eve on Fort Lauderdale Beach while his family watched a virtual church sermon from home on TV.<\/p>\n
They picked up food to have waiting for him when he came home, but he never did. <\/p>\n
His mother is now determined to bring him justice.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s so distraught, loss for words,\u201d her friend said. \u201cIt was her idea to let us come here. She wanted this to, you know, be the last time she remembered him.\u201d<\/p>\n
