New reports by NFL insiders Adam Schefter<\/a> and Tom Pelissero<\/a> on Thursday night say that former Cowboys quarterback and franchise icon Troy Aikman<\/a> will serve as a consultant in the Miami Dolphins\u2019 hunt for a new general manager.<\/p>\n

The Dolphins have been without an official GM since the franchise mutually parted ways with Chris Grier after a 2-7 start this season. Champ Kelly has been serving as the Dolphins\u2019 interim GM.<\/p>\n

Aikman\u2019s role won\u2019t be a permanent one, according to Schefter, but he will serve as an adviser throughout the process of the team\u2019s search for a GM. <\/p>\n

According to Schefter\u2019s report<\/a>, Dolphins ownership “wanted an outside respected perspective from someone who had strong relationships across the league.” Aikman brings that in droves as a Hall of Fame player and current ESPN color commentator for Monday Night Football. Aikman\u2019s role with the Dolphins isn\u2019t expected to impact his job at ESPN.<\/p>\n

Aikman has long been a sort of dream candidate for Cowboys fans to serve as the GM in Dallas, a role that owner Jerry Jones has filled since he took over the team three decades ago. Aikman, who won three Super Bowls with the franchise under Jones, would seemingly be an ideal candidate for Jones to eschew some or all of his GM duties off on, but there\u2019s little evidence<\/a> that\u2019s ever been more than a pipe dream for Cowboys fans.<\/p>\n

Aikman\u2019s expressed interest<\/a> in working as an NFL general manager in the past, but at other times he\u2019s admitted that, now at 59 years old, that opportunity may have passed him by<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Pellisero, Aikman himself is not considered a candidate for the Dolphins\u2019 GM job. He\u2019s currently doing background work ahead of interviews for the position next week.<\/p>\n
