Pinellas Park<\/a> police began investigating a shooting after a verbal argument escalated.<\/p>\nAccording to officers, around 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 34-year-old Barut Montijo was arrested and charged with attempted 2nd degree murder.<\/p>\n
Pinellas Park police say the incident began when an altercation took place in the street close to the corner of 63rd Street and 71st Avenue N. while fireworks were being discharged.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, one person was shot after an argument ensued between the victim and another person.<\/p>\n
Police said Montijo tried to grab onto the victim, who was on a motorcycle. While the motorcyclist backed up, the argument continued until Montijo reportedly pulled a gun from his waistband.<\/p>\n
The victim tried to ride away from the scene, and “Montijo discharged his firearm multiple times,” police said, hitting the rider.<\/p>\n
According to police, the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was located in a friend’s home, where he received life-saving measures and was taken to a local hospital. Police tell 10 Tampa Bay News that he remains stable.<\/p>\n
Following the shooting, Montijo fled the scene but later returned and surrendered to investigators voluntarily.<\/p>\n
According to jail records, Montijo was booked into the Pinellas County Jail around 8 a.m. Police say the shooting was isolated and that there is no threat to the community.<\/p>\n
This was not the only shooting that took place as the year began.
