Here\u2019s why they\u2019re a threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">There are plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/features\/2024\/11\/16\/vine-that-ate-the-south-heres-how-this-invasive-weed-threatened-to-take-over-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/features\/2024\/11\/16\/vine-that-ate-the-south-heres-how-this-invasive-weed-threatened-to-take-over-florida\/\">invasive<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/features\/2025\/08\/08\/the-worlds-most-dangerous-tree-is-in-florida-heres-how-it-could-kill-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/features\/2025\/08\/08\/the-worlds-most-dangerous-tree-is-in-florida-heres-how-it-could-kill-you\/\">toxic plants<\/a> in the Sunshine State, largely thanks to its warm, humid climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But out of all these different flora, one could be mistaken for a tasty, starchy treat: Dioscorea bulbifera, otherwise known as the \u201cAir Potato.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edis.ifas.ufl.edu\/publication\/AG112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/edis.ifas.ufl.edu\/publication\/AG112\">According to the UF\/IFAS<\/a>, these \u201cpotatoes\u201d look like anything but at first glance, as they\u2019re actually a twining vine, usually sprouting from an underground tuber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">These stems can grow up to 60 feet in length, and the plants form hundreds of bulbils that resemble small potatoes \u2014 hence the nickname.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">After forming, the bulbils \u2014 which can range up to roughly 5 inches across \u2014 drop to the ground and sprout even more plants.<\/p>\n<p>A photo of an air potato, courtesy of the UF\/IFAS (UF\/IFAS and Thomas Wright)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite the nickname, though, the air potato is actually a member of the yam family, according to UF\/IFAS researchers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Originally, they were cultivated for their edible underground tubers in Western Africa, but during the slave trade, the plant managed to find its way into the Americas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, air potatoes weren\u2019t introduced into Florida until 1905. Nowadays, they can be found across the state, from the panhandle all the way down to the Florida Keys.<\/p>\n<p>Air potato distribution map from the FDACS Terrestrial Noxious Weeds of Florida Field Guide (Public Record)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This is a bit of a problem, as the air potato is an invasive species, which was added to the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ccmedia.fdacs.gov\/content\/download\/82900\/file\/Noxious_Weeds_Field_Guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ccmedia.fdacs.gov\/content\/download\/82900\/file\/Noxious_Weeds_Field_Guide.pdf\">noxious weed list<\/a> in 1999. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As such, it\u2019s illegal to introduce, own, grow or move air potatoes in the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Plant-Pests-and-Diseases\/Noxious-Weeds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Plant-Pests-and-Diseases\/Noxious-Weeds\">without a proper permit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UF\/IFAS associate professor Carey Minteer examining an air potato at Indian River Research and Education Center (UF\/IFAS and Tyler Jones)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And even with the resemblance to traditional potatoes, these plants should be kept away from the menu. Not only do they generally taste bitter, but they can even be poisonous, with both the tubers and the bulbils containing toxic compounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Researchers say that these air potato vines can climb high into treetops to choke out sunlight, as well as blanket the understory. As such, air potatoes can have disastrous impacts on crops and native plants.<\/p>\n<p>An infestation of air potato vines (Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Luckily, researchers have a nifty tool to help cut down on the invasive tuber: the aptly named <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/duvalco\/2025\/11\/11\/new-air-potato-beetle-species-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/duvalco\/2025\/11\/11\/new-air-potato-beetle-species-release\/\">Air Potato Beetles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The beetles (a.k.a. \u201cLilioceris cheni\u201d) were first released into Florida back in 2012 to help control air potato vines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And while the insects have reportedly done a great job munching on the green bits, they haven\u2019t stopped the invasion, as they won\u2019t eat the bulbil portions of the air potato.<\/p>\n<p>Air potato beetle (UF\/IFAS and Camila Guillen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/duvalco\/2025\/11\/11\/new-air-potato-beetle-species-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/duvalco\/2025\/11\/11\/new-air-potato-beetle-species-release\/\">Cut to 2025<\/a>, and UF\/IFAS researchers announced that another species of air potato beetle (Lilioceris egena) had been released, which looks nigh identical to its cheni cousins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, the egena variants have larvae that feed exclusively on the air potato bulbils, making them a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/tag-teaming-beetles-work-together-to-fight-invasive-air-potato-vines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/tag-teaming-beetles-work-together-to-fight-invasive-air-potato-vines\/\">great supplement to the existing air potato beetles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In fact, Florida residents can request a shipment of these beetles to combat air potato vines on their own properties.
