DAVIE, Fla. \u2014 A 75-year-old Davie woman arced a Taser and claimed to be a cop as she intervened in a Walmart self-checkout dispute to defend a senior in a motor scooter, who witnesses say was making \u201cracist\u201d remarks to another customer.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s all according to court documents made public on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Davie police said the incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. on New Year\u2019s Day at the Walmart at 4301 S. University Drive.<\/p>\n
An arrest report states that the victim, her mother and an \u201cindependent witness\u201d all told police that the incident began with an \u201celderly\u201d woman in a motorized scooter \u201cmaking racist and abusive remarks\u201d towards the victim. Police said the victim told officers that the woman said, among other things, that the Hispanic victim \u201cdid not belong in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Investigators said another woman, later identified as Laurie Kavin, \u201cthen intervened by pulling a black Taser from her handbag, pointing it directly at (the victim and her mother) and arcing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police said Kavin then told the two women, \u201cStop, I am a police officer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Investigators said the 5-foot-5, 86-pound senior was not, in fact, a cop. They said surveillance footage showed her joining in the dispute and pulling out the Taser.<\/p>\n
The report states that an officer caught up to Kavin as she was walking with her dog in the parking lot.<\/p>\n
\u201cLaurie claimed she intervened to defend the elderly female and that during the argument, (the woman and her mother) approached them,\u201d the report states. \u201cLaurie admitted to pulling out a black Taser and arcing it to cause a spark, though she claimed she pointed it at the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police said she then confessed to identifying herself as a \u201cpolice officer.\u201d<\/p>\n
The report doesn\u2019t state whether Kavin was aware of the other senior\u2019s alleged remarks that led to the dispute.<\/p>\n
Authorities arrested her on charges of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony and impersonating a law enforcement officer.<\/p>\n
She would later be released from the Broward County jail on her own recognizance after a judge found probable cause for the charges, court records show.<\/p>\n
