One bill local leaders are paying attention to is property tax reform. FOX 13&#8217;s Genevieve Curtis reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. &#8211; As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Florida <\/a>lawmakers prepare to head back to Tallahassee, cities, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/pinellas\/st-petersburg?page=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">St Petersburg<\/a>, are sharpening their legislative wish lists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Some St. Petersburg city leaders say affordability, particularly housing, remains front and center heading into the legislative session.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;We always put forward proposals or wish list items around affordable housing. And I think that&#8217;s at the top of people&#8217;s minds,&#8221; said City Council member Richie Floyd.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-06-11h05m03s694.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Affordable housing initiatives are among the city\u2019s official legislative priorities, but it\u2019s another issue drawing significant attention at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Property tax elimination raises red flags<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-06-11h14m20s223.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Several bills filed in Tallahassee would eliminate or significantly reduce property taxes. Supporters argue the change could lower the cost of living and make homeownership more attainable.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">City leaders, however, warn that the loss of property tax revenue could directly affect the services residents rely on.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;So, it will put strain on the city, which could put strain on people&#8217;s own pocketbooks,&#8221; Floyd said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">In a letter to city council, City Administrator Lissette Hanewicz highlighted how dependent public safety funding is on property taxes.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">According to the city:<\/p>\n<p> 97.5% of property taxes collected fund police and fire servicesThat revenue currently covers 91.6% of St. Petersburg\u2019s total public safety costs. <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-06-11h05m10s013.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;When we need our first responders, we need them \u2014 period,&#8221; Hanewicz wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Because of those concerns, all members of city council agreed to begin stress-testing the budget to identify what could be cut if property tax revenues decline.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Lawmakers have already filed eight bills related to property tax reform.
