JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 Two officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office shot and killed a man Monday night in the Bartram Park area, and the same night across town, three officers shot a man in a separate incident in Arlington, JSO said. He was injured but survived.<\/p>\n
The deadly officer-involved shooting was the first recorded homicide of 2026 in Jacksonville. Per protocol, it will be investigated by the State Attorney\u2019s Office, which will determine whether the deadly force was justified.<\/p>\n
That shooting, like several deadly JSO-involved shootings last year, began as a response to a domestic dispute<\/a>.<\/p>\n Bartram Park police shooting<\/p>\n Police said they were called to the Luxor Club Apartments on Egrets Nest Drive around 8:30 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls, and officers later determined the dispute was an argument between a husband and wife.<\/p>\n According to JSO, one caller said she heard a woman screaming. When she stepped outside to see what was going on, she said she saw a woman on top of a Tesla banging on the hood of the vehicle. <\/p>\n The woman then got off the car, and the man, identified as 35-year-old Daniel Rodriguez, drove away before returning to the complex. <\/p>\n Officers said they separated the couple to get both sides of the story. The woman said they were married and that her husband owned two firearms.<\/p>\n When officers went to approach Rodriguez, they said he pulled a firearm from his waistband, leading the JSO officers to fire at him. Despite efforts to render aid, Rodriguez died at the scene, JSO said.<\/p>\n Neighbors told News4JAX the sound of gunshots is rare in the area and definitely caused concern Monday night.<\/p>\n Watch the full incident briefing from JSO in the video below:<\/p>\n JSO identified the two officers who shot Rodriguez as officers J. Rodrick and J. Milam. <\/p>\n Arlington police shooting<\/p>\n In the separate shooting in Arlington, which was reported just minutes later, three JSO officers shot a 68-year-old man<\/a> who police said pointed a rifle at them before he barricaded himself inside an Arlington home for about three hours.<\/p>\n The man was transported to a hospital, and his condition remained unknown.<\/p>\n According to JSO, around 8:40 p.m., police received a call from neighbors regarding shots fired on Creeks Ridge Road off St. Johns Bluff Road.<\/p>\n Police said when neighbors walked outside to see what happened, they saw a man in a garage holding a rifle.<\/p>\n When officers arrived and approached the house, they saw the suspect and told him to drop the rifle.<\/p>\n According to JSO, the suspect followed the orders and was taken into custody.<\/p>\n As officers were taking the suspect into custody, his father, identified as 68-year-old Offero Manalon, picked up the rifle that his son had been holding and pointed it at the officers, police said.<\/p>\n That\u2019s when three officers shot at Manalon, who then went back into the house.<\/p>\n The SWAT team was called to the scene, and a three-hour standoff took place, JSO said.<\/p>\n After the SWAT team gassed the home, Manalon came out and was taken into custody.<\/p>\n One neighbor told News4JAX that residents in the area were communicating on NextDoor trying to find out what was going on as their streets were swarmed by SWAT and heavy equipment.<\/p>\n Watch the full JSO incident briefing in the video below:<\/p>\n Domestic violence & police shootings<\/p>\n Of the 17 shootings in 2025 involving JSO officers, 11 were deadly. <\/p>\n According to News4JAX records, at least three of those deadly shootings began as domestic violence or disturbance calls, like the one Monday night.<\/p>\n In one incident in 2025, three officers ended up fatally shooting a 28-year-old who JSO said was waving a gun<\/a> while \u201cholding his girlfriend against her will\u201d when the police were called.<\/p>\n In another 2025 incident, a 37-year-old man was involved in a violent altercation<\/a> with his girlfriend and became aggressive toward responding officers, who eventually shot him in the chaotic encounter.<\/p>\n
