{"id":108235,"date":"2026-01-06T22:59:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T22:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/108235\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T22:59:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T22:59:07","slug":"judge-allows-jury-to-hear-taped-confession-at-trial-of-hialeah-teen-accused-of-killing-his-mother-wsvn-7news-miami-news-weather-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/108235\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge allows jury to hear taped confession at trial of Hialeah teen accused of killing his mother &#8211; WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI (WSVN) &#8211; New details have emerged at a Miami court appearance regarding the case of a <a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/13-year-old-boy-arrested-admits-to-fatally-stabbing-mother-at-hialeah-apartment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">15-year-old who was accused of killing his own mother in 2023.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rosa previously made a <a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/hialeah-teenager-accused-of-fatally-stabbing-his-mother-speaks-out-during-virtual-court-appearance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">virtual court appearance<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said that Derek Rosa, who was 13 years old when he was accused of fatally stabbing his mother over two years ago, confessed to stabbing his own mother to death on camera.<\/p>\n<p>However, Rosa\u2019s defense team said that the recording should not have been played during the trial. But a judge ruled otherwise, allowing the recording to be played.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere exactly did you cut her?\u201d asked an investigator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, I cut her right here,\u201d said Rosa, who was 13 at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh, there\u2019s some red stains right there. Is that blood?\u201d asked the investigator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is,\u201d responded Rosa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK,\u201d responded the investigator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a little bit of blood on my hands,\u201d said Rosa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn your hands too?\u201d asked the investigator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d responded Rosa.<\/p>\n<p>The recording of Rosa speaking to a Hialeah police detective was previously released to the public.<\/p>\n<p>However, the teen\u2019s lawyers asked the court to suppress the evidence at trial, saying he did not fully understand his right to remain silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s here for seeking the truth, the process here is for finding out what are reliable facts,\u201d said Judge Hersch.<\/p>\n<p>The judge ultimately ruled that the taped confession could be played before the jury.<\/p>\n<p>Rosa\u2019s defense team also said they are trying to reach a plea agreement before trial.<\/p>\n<p>Several of <a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/supporters-of-hialeah-teen-accused-of-killing-his-mother-rally-for-his-innocence-as-body-camera-footage-shows-teens-arrest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rosa\u2019s supporters<\/a> also showed up for the hearing to support the defendant.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, the judge also refused to delay the trial.
