{"id":110587,"date":"2026-01-08T16:42:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/110587\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T16:42:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:42:10","slug":"weekend-spotlight-mozart-and-the-orchestra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/110587\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend spotlight: Mozart and the orchestra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The chief conductor of Sweden\u2019s G\u00e4vle Symphony Orchestra \u2013 his name is Christian Reif \u2013 takes the reins of The Florida Orchestra\u2019s latest Masterworks program Friday evening at the Straz Center (Morsani Hall) and again Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Mahaffey Theater.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cheadlining\u201d piece is Mozart\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 21, with guest soloist Evren Ozel, from Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Mozel was the Bronze Medalist at the 17th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (2025), where he also received a separate distinction for \u201cBest Performance of a Mozart Concerto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wagner\u2019s epic Ring of the Nibelung is distilled into a 10-minute piece called Siegfried\u2019s Rhine Journey from G\u00f6tterd\u00e4mmerung, adapted by Engelbert Humperdinck (the composer of the Hansel and Gretel opera, not the guy who sang \u201cAfter the Lovin\u2019\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The program also includes\u00a0Shostakovich\u2019s final symphony, No. 15, and a \u201cmystery piece\u201d selected by TFO music director Michael Franis (Maybe it\u2019s \u201cAfter the Lovin\u2019\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>For performance times and tickets v<a href=\"https:\/\/floridaorchestra.org\/event\/2526-mw5-mozart-piano-concerto-21\/?utm_source=wordfly&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=MozartPiano21Resend&amp;utm_content=version_A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">isit the TFO website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TFO musicians will bring their instruments to the Museum of the American Arts &amp; Crafts Museum Saturday for a \u201csee, touch and play\u201d instrument petting zoo. The 10 a.m. event is included with museum admission.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Theater and dance<\/p>\n<p>Rajiv Joseph\u2019s dark, puzzling and ultimately compelling drama Gruesome Playground Injuries opens a two-weekend run Friday at the Off-Central. The play, which follows (in non-linear fashion) two friends who measure their lives in injury, misery and self-inflicted pain (hey, it has light moments too) stars Troy Padraic Brooks and Sarah Beth Saho, and is directed by Anthony Gervais. All three original members of the Kingston Trio, that pioneering, harmonizing group from the early 1960s \u2013 have passed on. It\u2019s been a few years now.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that there\u2019s still an \u201cauthorized\u201d Kingston Trio, and they\u2019ve got a concert tonight at the Central Park Performing Arts Center in Largo. The trio\u2019s main motivator is Mike Marin, who as a younger man was a family friend to founding KT member Nick Reynolds and his kids.<\/p>\n<p>This is \u201cHang Down Your Head Tom Dooley\u201d and \u201cWhere Have All the Flowers Gone\u201d stuff, and yes, the \u201cnew\u201d guys are still wearing blue and white striped button-down shirts.<\/p>\n<p>The show is tonight at 7:30; find tickets <a href=\"https:\/\/larg-internet.choicecrm.net\/dist\/#\/event-details\/S0:E2545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Irish singer and songwriter Brendan Nolan, a longtime resident of St. Pete Beach, plays and sings songs and stories Saturday at the Palladium Theater\u2019s Side Door Cabaret. Tickets are <a href=\"https:\/\/palatspc.na.ticketsearch.com\/sales\/salesevent\/19353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Friday brings the rock orchestra Classic Albums Live to the Capitol Theatre, for a song-by-song live performance of the last Beatles album, Abbey Road.
