Instead, the issue was referred back to the House Natural Resources Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The House voted 236-188 to support the legislation, with seven members voting \u201cpresent.\u201d But an override of the veto would have required two-thirds of lawmakers, or 287 votes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In total, 24 Republicans voted with all Democrats in attempting to override the bill. Those included U.S. Reps.\u00a0Mario D\u00edaz-Balart,\u00a0Carlos Gim\u00e9nez\u00a0and\u00a0Mar\u00eda Elvira Salazar, all Miami-Dade County Republicans. U.S. Rep.\u00a0John Rutherford, a Jacksonville Republican, did not vote, but all other Florida Republicans voted to sustain Trump\u2019s veto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/504\/all-actions\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">HR 504<\/a>) was sponsored by Gim\u00e9nez and supported by the Florida congressional delegation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Still, Trump nixed the bipartisan legislation at the end of 2025 after it passed the House on a voice vote and the Senate by unanimous consent, marking one of the first vetoes of his second term.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaytrumbull.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jay-trumbull-florida-politics-banner-ads-728x90-b-scaled-e1740688220698.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trump called the bill \u201cspecial treatment\u201d and raised a lawsuit brought by the Tribe that briefly halted operations at <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/758889-inside-alligator-alcatraz-where-detainees-uniform-color-is-based-on-criminal-history\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Alligator Alcatraz<\/a>, a migrant detention center opened by the state in the Florida Everglades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy Administration is committed to preventing American taxpayers from funding projects for special interests, especially those that are unaligned with my Administration\u2019s policy of removing violent criminal illegal aliens from the country,\u201d Trump wrote in a veto message. \u201cEnding the massive cost of taxpayer handouts and restoring fiscal sanity is vital to economic growth and the fiscal health of the Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Weston Democrat, criticized the veto and the President\u2019s logic in a speech on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt does not appropriate or authorize any new spending. The Congressional Budget Office verified that,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd this bill, in no way bestows special treatment, as it was alleged in the veto message, because the site wasn\u2019t authorized when it was inhabited on these points. It appears the President\u2019s staff gave him bad advice, bad facts, or both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But despite the bill passing in the House without any objection <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepCarlos\/status\/1944868892595380387\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">in July<\/a>, the prospect of overriding a veto proved daunting in the lower chamber.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rubinturnbull.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/rt_webad_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-335063\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/about\/members.htm\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">House Natural Resources Committee<\/a> Chair, was the only lawmaker to speak on the floor against the bill.
