This week marked four weeks since Franz Wagner<\/a> suffered a left high ankle sprain and one year since older brother Moe Wagner<\/a>, underwent successful surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee.<\/p>\n

So how close are the pair of Magic<\/a> teammates to returning to the court?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s complicated.<\/p>\n

Franz Wagner, who was ruled out of his 15th straight game before Orlando<\/a> hosted Philadelphia<\/a> at Kia Center<\/a> on Friday night, has \u201cbeen on the court doing a little bit more, a little bit of contact stuff, just getting his cardio and conditioning up on the court,\u201d according to coach Jamahl Mosley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Moe Wagner has \u201cbeen on the court, has done some 2-on-2, 3-on-3, playing some games, doing some contact stuff,\u201d and is \u201cslowly working his way back,\u201d Mosley said.<\/p>\n

But in the words of Mosley, \u201cIt\u2019s always going to depend on how they respond to those days\u201d of work.<\/p>\n

Time, however, is running out for the Wagner brothers to return to the court before the team travels to their home country of Germany to take on the Grizzlies in Berlin on Thursday. Orlando then faces Memphis in London on Jan. 18.<\/p>\n

Making sure they\u2019re healthy in time for the Berlin and London games while also thinking about the second half of the regular season that follows those international contests is tricky.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge in that is, you think long term,\u201d Mosley said. \u201cYou want them to be ready for that Berlin game. They want to be ready for that Berlin game, and that\u2019s a big key. That\u2019s the ideal world.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then the reality of what we\u2019re facing is the fact that you want them to be ready for the long game as well,\u201d the Magic coach added. \u201cWe have a long season ahead of us, and you want them to be prepared and as healthy as possible, walking into each one of those games from then on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orlando entered Friday\u2019s game at home 7-7 without Franz Wagner. The team had alternated its past 11 games with wins and losses, having not won consecutive contests since Nov. 28-Dec. 1.<\/p>\n

The Magic have also been without All-Defensive guard Jalen Suggs<\/a> for 10 of the past 12 games first because of a left hip bruise and then a right knee MCL bruise.<\/p>\n

The inconsistent roster availability has led to up-and-down performances by the Magic even as different reserves such as rookies Noah Penda<\/a> and Jase Richardson as well as third-year pros Anthony Black<\/a> and Jett Howard have stepped up at times.<\/p>\n

Mosley isn\u2019t using the injury bug as an excuse for the team\u2019s lack of consistency.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to speak the truth about all of these things,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause otherwise, you don\u2019t solve it. We just talked this morning in our film session about when Franz comes back, when Moe comes back, when Jalen comes back. We\u2019ve been in this situation before.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you have to learn and take something from those moments \u2014 and it\u2019s going to be clunky at first \u2014 but you take something from \u2026 that experience that you\u2019ve learned from, and then you take off running,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

While talking about their returns to the court is encouraging, there are still key steps for all involved and their respective rehabs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, in my mind, yes, but like I said, it always depends on how they respond to the treatment that they\u2019re going through,\u201d Mosely said.<\/p>\n
