PETERSBURG, Fla \u2014 A bill, whose sponsor says will strengthen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/election-day-2025-manatee-pinellas-polk-nov-4\/67-46443975-ec39-456a-8d80-ad4010ca7858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">election<\/a> security in Florida, was filed last week to be considered for the incoming legislative session in Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p>State representative Berny Jacques (R-59) announced on Jan. 5 his <a href=\"https:\/\/flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Documents\/loaddoc.aspx?FileName=_h0985__.docx&amp;DocumentType=Bill&amp;BillNumber=985&amp;Session=2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">new proposal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bill says that, if approved during the legislative session, it would authorize the supervisor of elections &#8220;to verify citizenship status for new voter registration applications,&#8221; according to the representative&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Also, according to the representative, the bill would authorize removing citizens from the voter registry who obtain a driver&#8217;s license in another state.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also includes a measure that would add an &#8220;NC&#8221; designation to the back of a state-issued driver&#8217;s license and would require that a potential voter who presents an ID with that designation get a provisional ballot until they can provide proof of citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jacques added that the bill was designed to reinforce security during elections in Florida by ensuring that only citizens can vote in the elections.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through verification of citizenship of new voters, non-citizen designations on state-issued identification, and an up-to-date voter registry, Florida\u2019s elections will be more secure than ever before,&#8221; the representative added through the press release.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/investigations\/10-investigates\/broken-ballots-floridas-voter-fraud-arrests-show-cracks-election-system\/67-d1aeb89f-cfb4-428a-a48c-a0ea10af9e68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">10 Investigates<\/a> spoke with Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer, who said that voter fraud was not a widespread problem. He said the few cases he saw would not be enough to impact the outcome of any election.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors in Florida had also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/investigations\/10-investigates\/jury-trial-hillsborough-man-arrested-voter-fraud\/67-7b22d264-3c89-4463-94d5-a36fcdd07d73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">charged<\/a> 20 people, some of them in the Tampa Bay area, with false swearing and voter fraud in 2020 for casting ballots in the election despite their status as either felony sex offenders or convicted murderers.<\/p>\n<p>Many of those arrested believed they were eligible to vote because they received valid registration cards from the state. Confusion around an amendment, which restored voting rights to some people with felony convictions, also led them to believe their voting rights were restored.
