{"id":117526,"date":"2026-01-14T07:44:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T07:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/117526\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T07:44:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T07:44:13","slug":"emily-gregory-jon-maples-advance-in-hd-87-special-election-with-primary-wins-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/117526\/","title":{"rendered":"Emily Gregory, Jon Maples advance in HD 87 Special Election with Primary wins Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Voters in coastal Palm Beach County moved one step closer to again having Tallahassee representation Tuesday, when they cast ballots in Primary races for House District 87.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With Election Day votes mostly counted and a high tally of early and mail-in ballots, Emily Gregory took 88% of the vote to defeat Laura Levites in the Democratic Primary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Republican Primary, meanwhile, Jon Maples similarly dominated with 84% of the vote over Gretchen Miller Feng.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those numbers are likely to shift as additional ballots get counted. This report will be updated as that happens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gregory and Maples will now advance to a Special General Election on March 24.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colodnyfass.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-767195 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/FloridaPolitics.com_ColodnyFass_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe FHRCC was proud to have joined with President Donald J. Trump in endorsing candidate Jon Maples in the Republican primary, and we will continue our strong support through the March 24 special general election and beyond,\u201d said Speaker-designate Sam Garrison, the Florida House Republican Campaign Committee (FHRCC) Chair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs we begin the 2026 Legislative Session, we are reminded of our Party\u2019s strength of ideas, responsible leadership, and promise of a better Florida, as reasons why voters continue to elect and re-elect Republicans to office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">HD 87 runs up the coast of Palm Beach County, spanning Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Juno Beach and Hypoluxo. It\u2019s been without representation <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/752176-gov-desantis-appoints-mike-caruso-as-palm-beach-county-clerk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">since August<\/a>, when Republican Rep.\u00a0Mike Caruso resigned for an appointed job as the Palm Beach County Clerk and Comptroller.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The prolonged vacancy \u2014 and Gov.\u00a0Ron DeSantis\u2019 delay in calling a Special Election \u2014 became a central issue in the race itself; it left HD 87 voteless during the regular 2026 Legislative Session and even prompted one candidate to try to force the Governor\u2019s hand through the courts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That candidate was Gregory, a Jupiter-based small-business owner and public health professional who established herself as the most visible Democrat in the race since the vacancy occurred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cflpublicaffairs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-680168 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CFPA-Digital-Ad-Sunburn-728x90-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She drew attention to her campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/candidate-files-lawsuit-to-force-governor-ron-desantis-to-call-special-election-in-palm-beach-county-palm-beach-county-circuit-court-by-emily-gregory-october-7-2025\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">in October<\/a>,\u00a0when she filed a lawsuit to compel DeSantis to call a Special Election, arguing that HD 87 voters were being denied representation as lawmakers prepared to convene in Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lawsuit was ultimately rendered moot by the Governor\u2019s executive order setting election dates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the campaign trail, Gregory focused on public education funding, health care access and property insurance costs. She entered the final stretch of the Primary with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/769426-emily-gregory-lands-new-endorsements-tops-80k-in-hd-87-special-election-as-vote-by-mail-begins\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">clear fundraising advantage<\/a>\u00a0on the Democratic side, having raised more than $101,000 through Jan. 8 and spending nearly $49,000, both outpacing her opponent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Levites, a Lake Worth Beach resident and first-time candidate, pitched herself as a community advocate and political outsider.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her campaign focused heavily on the cost-of-living pressures, including property insurance premiums and housing affordability. She also leaned into environmental issues and local infrastructure concerns, including flooding and traffic congestion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But she struggled in fundraising, adding no outside contributions and loaning her campaign just $450.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Republican Primary arguably drew more eyes, due to Maples\u2019 public service record and support he gained from high-profile Republicans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A financial planner and Lake Clarke Shores Council member of two years when he entered the race last year, Maples \u2014 who vacated his Town Council seat to run for HD 87 \u2014 quickly consolidated support from GOP leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He secured backing from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/763305-house-republicans-back-jon-maples-in-hd-87-special-election\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FHRCC<\/a>, a slate of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753424-jon-maples-notches-key-endorsement-from-maga-meg-weinberger-in-hd-87-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">GOP lawmakers<\/a> and later landed an endorsement from <a href=\"https:\/\/flvoicenews.com\/trump-endorses-jon-maples-in-florida-house-special-election\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maples ran as a reliable conservative aligned with Trump-era priorities, emphasizing fiscal restraint, opposition to tax increases and a pro-business climate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also built the largest war chest in the Republican field, stacking more than $278,000 between his campaign account and political committee,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89143\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Friends of Jon Maples<\/a>, plus another $14,000 in candidate loans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He spent nearly $157,000 as of Jan. 8.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Feng, a paralegal and regulatory consultant from West Palm Beach, cast herself as an outsider running against party insiders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She focused her campaign on affordability, opposition to unchecked growth and outrage over the district being unrepresented during the 2026 Session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But she ran at a marked funding disadvantage, raising just over $12,000 and spending $11,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">___<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ryan Nicol of Florida Politics contributed to this report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Voters in coastal Palm Beach County moved one step closer to again having Tallahassee representation Tuesday, when they&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":117527,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[8184,6873,28,30,29,59201,59202,59203,59204,9097,557],"class_list":["post-117526","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-florida","tag-election-2026","tag-emily-gregory","tag-florida","tag-florida-headlines","tag-florida-news","tag-gretchen-miller-feng","tag-hd-87","tag-jon-maples","tag-laura-levites","tag-palm-beach","tag-palm-beach-county"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/117526","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=117526"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/117526\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/117527"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=117526"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=117526"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=117526"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
