(Ashley Bigbee\/FAMUAN)<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in 13 years, Florida A&amp;M\u00a0University has\u00a0raised its\u00a0tuition rates\u00a0by\u00a015% for\u00a0out-of-state\u00a0non-resident,\u00a0graduate\u00a0and law\u00a0students,\u00a0slated to\u00a0be effective in the fall of 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The increase comes as the university seeks to adhere to\u00a0a\u00a0State University System-wide\u00a0increase\u00a0that was\u00a0voted\u00a0on by the Board of\u00a0Governors on June 18\u00a0to increase out-of-state fees by 10% for the fall 2025 semester\u00a0and by\u00a015% for the fall 2026 semester.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by FAMU Communications, the university made the decision to opt out of the fall 2025 increase to\u00a0\u201cgive families more time to plan for a 15% increase in Fall 2026.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe increase will be used to meet increasing operation demands, maintain student services, enhance the student learning environment, and ensure that all students make an equitable contribution towards the escalating cost of instruction,\u201d acting\u00a0Chief\u00a0Financial\u00a0Officer Nichole Murray\u00a0said\u00a0in an Aug.\u00a015 press release.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s compliance\u00a0with the increase\u00a0comes\u00a0after a contentious presidential search and\u00a0shaky\u00a0financial findings\u00a0discovered in\u00a0a March 2025\u00a0auditor general\u2019s report\u00a0from the previous fiscal year.\u00a0While FAMU says it will\u00a0maintain\u00a0its\u00a0commitment to affordability,\u00a0many alumni\u00a0speculate\u00a0that this will heavily affect the recruitment of \u201cthe best and brightest\u201d of the\u00a0out-of-state\u00a0population housed at FAMU.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/EP9U0797-1024x791.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55040\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The energy of the student section remains high at a FAMU football game. (Ashley Bigbee\/FAMUAN)<\/p>\n<p>The student body, including graduate and law students, currently consists of about 23.89% out-of-state students, while Board of Governors Regulation 7.006 sets the rate of out-of-state students at 10%. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/local\/famu-news\/2025\/09\/18\/famu-board-considers-15-out-of-state-tuition-increase-for-fall-2026\/86199542007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tallahassee Democrat<\/a>, a spokesperson from the Board of Governors confirmed that the cap is not 10% for these students and universities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While FAMU does not have to officially limit their number\u00a0of\u00a0out-of-state\u00a0students,\u00a0the university\u00a0is evaluated by the Board of Governors\u2019\u00a0performance-based funding model.\u00a0Within the 10 metrics set by the board,\u00a0universities must\u00a0maintain\u00a0their current ratios of in-state to out-of-state students and not displace resident students for higher-paying, nonresident applicants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No\u00a0official\u00a0cuts to\u00a0out-of-state\u00a0recruitment efforts have been confirmed. However,\u00a0in the released\u00a0presidential recruitment tour dates for fall 2025, the tour will\u00a0only\u00a0visit Atlanta, Georgia,\u00a0once during the semester\u2014a\u00a0noticeable difference\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0tour schedule in 2022 which has two visits to Georgia,\u00a0both\u00a0Atlanta\u00a0and Macon, in\u00a0the month of September\u00a0alone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The official\u00a0price per credit\u00a0for out-of-state\u00a0undergraduate students at FAMU will\u00a0increase from $549 to $606, $1,022 to $1,110 for graduate students and\u00a0$1,097 to $1,189 for law students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/EP9U8042-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55039\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Students gather together in the Grand Ballroom.
