{"id":120714,"date":"2026-01-16T16:13:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T16:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/120714\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T16:13:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T16:13:08","slug":"derek-rosa-the-hialeah-teen-accused-of-murdering-his-mother-to-appear-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/120714\/","title":{"rendered":"Derek Rosa, the Hialeah teen accused of murdering his mother, to appear in court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">MIAMI \u2014 Fifteen-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/topic\/Derek_Rosa\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/topic\/Derek_Rosa\/\">Derek Rosa<\/a> is set to appear in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Friday morning, four days before his first-degree murder trial is set to begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Hialeah police said Rosa, then 13, stabbed his 39-year-old mother, Irina Garcia, 46 times as she slept at their apartment next to her newborn daughter at 211 W. 79th Place on Oct. 12, 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Tuesday. He is being tried as an adult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A number of hearings have been held in recent months ahead of the trial, including unsuccessful attempts by his defense team to have key pieces of evidence \u2015 including the teenager\u2019s confession \u2015 thrown out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In court filings, prosecutors said Rosa was obsessed with blood and gore in the period leading up to the killing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prosecutors said in a court filing that the day before the killing, he told a friend he wanted to be the murderous, machete-wielding character Jason from the \u201cFriday the 13th\u201d horror movie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">They said on the day of the killing, he showed a \u201cgruesome\u201d suicide video of a U.S. Army veteran to his girlfriend on the school bus; she broke up with him later that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After the killing, prosecutors said Rosa took bloody selfies and texted photos of his mother\u2019s body to a friend out of state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/K2I3JOVBJOPKYXB5N5YWA4VR5I.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Derek Rosa and knife prosecutors say was used in his mother&#8217;s killing.
