Three months after breaking ground on new affordable housing, Community Housing & Resources (CHR) announced that the future Harkey House at Riverview is fully funded.<\/p>\n

CHR Executive Director Nicole McHale praised the community for its generous support.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a \u2018we\u2019 effort, proof-positive that our island community shares the vision for every person to have a quality, affordable place to call home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Named for Bill and Laurie Harkey, who gave $1.5 million to the project, the Harkey House is rising on the site of CHR\u2019s former Riverview, which was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Ian. CHR later demolished it and launched a $7 million capital campaign to replace it. The new structure will have 15 up-to-date, single-bedroom and bath units designed to withstand harsh weather more effectively.<\/p>\n

On Sept. 4, CHR leaders and local dignitaries broke ground for the new housing.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to take about one year.<\/p>\n

The Harkey House at Riverview is at 1517 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.<\/p>\n
