TALLAHASSEE –\u00a0The Florida State women’s tennis team defeated USF 6-1\u00a0Saturday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.\u00a0The Seminoles have now won 17 consecutive season-opening matches.<\/p>\n
In doubles, Eva Shaw<\/a> and Millie Bissett<\/a> picked up right where they left off in the fall, earning a 6-0 victory to begin the day for the Seminoles. The Bulls answered with a victory on Court 3, leaving the doubles point to be decided on Court 2. After a 2-2 tie, Laura Putz<\/a> and Tina Li<\/a> clinched the point for FSU, winning four of the next six games to earn a 6-4 victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n Freshman Abby Kelliher<\/a> earned her first career dual-match victory, defeating Amelie Drukerova 6-2, 6-3 to give the Seminoles their first singles point of the match. On Court 4, Mary Boyce Deatherage<\/a> trailed 6-5 before sending the set to a tiebreaker and winning it 7-6(1). She went on to earn a straight-sets victory of 7-6(1), 6-1.<\/p>\n With FSU holding\u00a0a 3-0 lead, Putz clinched the match on Court 3 for the Seminoles, defeating Margherita Marcon 6-3, 6-3. The match continued on Courts 2, 5, and 1. The Bulls earned a victory on Court 5.<\/p>\n Shaw battled back after dropping the first set\u00a0to earn a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory to begin her spring after qualifying for the NCAA Singles Championships in the fall.<\/p>\n Bisset ended the day for the Noles, winning another intense three-set battle 6-3, 6-7(3), 1-0(6) as Florida State went on to a 6-1 victory<\/p>\n The Seminoles return to action next Saturday against Nevada as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
