{"id":123825,"date":"2026-01-19T15:39:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T15:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/123825\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T15:39:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T15:39:19","slug":"crowds-cope-with-cold-as-they-honor-legacy-of-civil-rights-icon-at-jacksonvilles-45th-annual-mlk-holiday-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/123825\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowds cope with cold as they honor legacy of civil rights icon at Jacksonville\u2019s 45th annual MLK Holiday Parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 Hundreds of bundled-up onlookers gathered Monday morning to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Jacksonville\u2019s 45th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Local marching bands, dance troupes and floats anchored this year\u2019s procession, highlighting King\u2019s message of unity and equality across the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The parade begins at 11 a.m. from Lot E at EverBank Stadium, travels west on Bay Street and turns north on Market Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">WATCH: Press play above to watch the parade live on News4JAX+<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Last year\u2019s parade was postponed to February because of the dangerously cold and icy conditions in Jacksonville. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/18\/expect-a-wet-sunday-throughout-northeast-florida-southeast-georgia-ahead-of-another-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/18\/expect-a-wet-sunday-throughout-northeast-florida-southeast-georgia-ahead-of-another-freeze\/\">This year\u2019s weather won\u2019t be as extreme, but it will be chilly.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite the cold, the parade &#8212; which has been a cornerstone event for more than four decades &#8212; went on, and organizers encouraged attendees to dress warmly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">RELATED | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/01\/16\/jacksonville-city-leaders-educators-students-to-honor-martin-luther-king-jrs-legacy-at-39th-annual-breakfast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/01\/16\/jacksonville-city-leaders-educators-students-to-honor-martin-luther-king-jrs-legacy-at-39th-annual-breakfast\/\">Jacksonville city leaders, educators, students honor Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s legacy at 39th annual breakfast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis is an opportunity to get out here and represent Martin Luther King today, and we are also giving away a scholarship to a deserving person who would like to attend Edward Waters University,\u201d said Ava Jacques with ALCAM Community Action Motivators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Friday, News4JAX joined the city and local organizations that kicked off the MLK celebration with the Dr. King annual breakfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Randolph Hall, with the Dr. MLK Memorial Foundation and the MLK parade coordinator, said that when he thinks of this day, he is grateful because it serves as a reminder that there is power in unity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIn this day and age, I think we need more unity and more synergy between city leaders and civic leaders, community leaders, people in general. There is too much division in our country right now, and I don\u2019t believe in divides when it comes to status and position. We are all just one people,\u201d Hall said. \u201cWe are all Americans, and we all need each other. We need people in politics to speak to those who don\u2019t have a voice, and we need people who don\u2019t have a voice to use their voice for this country to live up to the power of its creed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For Hall, the meaning of Monday\u2019s holiday to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is personal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cA lot of people lost their lives for us to have that day. A lot of people were beaten, bitten by dogs, (had their) homes and churches bombed.
