{"id":123911,"date":"2026-01-19T17:09:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T17:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/123911\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T17:09:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T17:09:10","slug":"florida-initial-unemployment-claims-show-sharp-spike-for-week-ending-jan-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/123911\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida initial unemployment claims show sharp spike for week ending Jan. 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the busy holiday season gets further in the rearview mirror, new jobless claims in Florida are spiking significantly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The U.S. Department of Labor (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">DOL<\/a>) reports there were 6,827 unemployment filings in the Sunshine State for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ui\/data.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">week ending Jan. 10<\/a>. That\u2019s up substantially from the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/773131-holiday-jobs-bump-is-over-as-new-unemployment-claims-increase-to-start-2026\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">previous week\u2019s figure<\/a> of 4,205, a jump of 2,622 claims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latest report is the biggest increase in Florida in months. It\u2019s also the first time there have been more than 6,000 claims since well before the holiday hiring rush, as stores prepared for the shopping season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida\u2019s increase in claims reflected the national picture. There were 330,684 new filings across the country last week. That\u2019s a 10.7% jump from the previous week\u2019s number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the national figure didn\u2019t increase as much as DOL analysts expected. Economists projected an increase of 45,652 claims, or a 15.3% climb.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vieraforflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-753828 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Luis-Viera-Ads-728x90-px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the national numbers rose week to week, new claims are down from the same time last year. During the comparable week in 2025, there were 353,357 claims. The most recent report is a drop of 22,673 claims from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unemployment filings typically increase following the holidays as businesses no longer have an increased need for workers. But the news is still unwelcome for Florida, which saw steady declines in new jobless filings in the months leading up to the holidays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridajobs.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FloridaCommerce<\/a>, the state\u2019s economic development bureau, reports the November general unemployment rate was 4.2%. That\u2019s a jump of 0.3 percentage points over the September figure of 3.9%.
