Organizers say that thousands of people attended the 2025 Pinellas TacoFest. They expect bigger numbers at this year\u2019s event, Saturday and Sunday at England Brothers Park in Pinellas Park.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The highlight of the festival is a master chef \u201cBattle of the Bites\u201d taco competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More than 20 participants will compete in various different categories, including chicken, beef, pork and seafood. An \u201cother\u201d category will celebrate the most creative tacos \u2013 including dessert options, explained organizer Suzanne King.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Local food bloggers and influencers, Adam and Keegan Bennett, Ren Rose, Eamon Bolten, Tony El Tigre and Judy Cortez, will judge the Jan. 24 cook-off. <\/p>\n

Attendees can participate in a taco eating contest Jan. 25. The winner will receive a cash prize.<\/p>\n

Rene Valenzuela, owner of Rene\u2019s Mexican Kitchen, won \u201cBest Taco in Tampa Bay\u201d in 2024 and 2025. Last year\u2019s creation was a crab cake taco inspired by northwest Mexico, where Valenzuela\u2019s father was born.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the appeal of coming to this event is that the vendors can bring something special \u2013 something you can\u2019t really find at your local taqueria,\u201d he said. \u201cWe come from different families from different regions and we have different recipes and this is the weekend you can indulge.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

What do we really know about the taco?\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to University of Minnesota history professor Jeffrey Pilcher,\u00a0the origins of the Mexican dish are unknown. He believes that the taco was created<\/a> in the 18th century by Mexican silver miners. <\/p>\n

The word \u201ctaco\u201d was once used to describe \u201cpieces of paper\u201d workers would use to \u201cwrap around gunpowder and insert into the holes they carved in the rock face.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, there is evidence that ancient civilizations<\/a> placed food such as fish and beans in corn tortillas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tacos are not the only offering at the Pinellas event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Live music is planned, with multiple local acts. The animal-friendly event will also raise funds for multiple animal rescue organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

King, who serves as the president of SIK Promotions, also oversees the Get Rescued Festival<\/a> \u2013 which will be held in February in Gulfport. Part of the proceeds of the Pinellas TacoFest will be donated to the effort.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Local artisans and craftsmen are scheduled to participate. Additionally, a variety of sauce and spice vendors will attend, she added. \u00a0<\/p>\n

There will also be a dedicated children\u2019s area, offering an array of activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first Pinellas TacoFest was held in 2022. \u201cIt\u2019s growing,\u201d King said. \u201cSo, every year we have new taco vendors. They hear about it and come from all over.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year, vendors from Tampa, Orlando, Spring Hill, Sebring and even Maryland plan to cook for attendees. <\/p>\n
