TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The City of Tallahassee celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s life and legacy with several events on Monday, including its annual parade. <\/p>\n
People at today\u2019s events said this is about honoring a legacy and spreading a message of unity above all else. <\/p>\n
A commemoration, hosted by the Tallahassee NAACP<\/a> for 41 years, reflected on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/p>\n As the clock struck noon, the City of Tallahassee\u2019s annual MLK Parade came marching down Monroe Street. <\/p>\n Sharona Dukes and her family were among the hundreds of people attending Monday\u2019s parade. <\/p>\n \u201cHave a legacy or practice that we do here as part of our family to support the MLK dream of bringing unity to our city and having the little ones follow along in those steps and continue that dream going forward,\u201d Dukes said.<\/p>\n She said she wants to set the example for her two young children. \u201cDemocracy is what we\u2019re living for and dreaming for and what we want to continue to impress upon our youth and actually doing it is what needs to be done, so not just talking about it, but having him be apart of it, having him see it, having him interact with people who are making the paths along the way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n The celebration continued on Adams Street with a festival and performances. <\/p>\n 14-year-old Victor Ross said he\u2019s grateful for Dr. King\u2019s legacy. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m mixed with white and black, so I wouldn\u2019t be here today if it wasn\u2019t for him. Us, we wouldn\u2019t be united right now.
