(WCTV\/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) &#8211; On Tuesday, the Florida Legislature voted to advance a bill named after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2025\/05\/20\/mom-stepdad-arrested-accused-cruelty-abuse-after-5-year-old-dies-monday-tallahassee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2025\/05\/20\/mom-stepdad-arrested-accused-cruelty-abuse-after-5-year-old-dies-monday-tallahassee\/\" target=\"_blank\">5-year-old Tallahassee girl whose death in May resulted in the arrest of her mother and stepfather<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83039\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83039\">Missy\u2019s Law<\/a> is designed to keep violent offenders in custody while they await sentencing. Florida Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2025\/06\/24\/florida-attorney-general-proposes-missys-law-following-death-5-year-old-tallahassee-girl\/https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2025\/06\/24\/florida-attorney-general-proposes-missys-law-following-death-5-year-old-tallahassee-girl\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2025\/06\/24\/florida-attorney-general-proposes-missys-law-following-death-5-year-old-tallahassee-girl\/https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2025\/06\/24\/florida-attorney-general-proposes-missys-law-following-death-5-year-old-tallahassee-girl\/\">James Uthmeier proposed Missy\u2019s Law<\/a> in June. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">The bill, sponsored by Rep.
