Prices in the Miami, Broward and Palm Beach area rose 2.6%, while nationally the rate of inflation was 2.7% in 2025. Nationally, price rises were moderated by a 3.4% decrease in spending for gasoline, and the drop was even greater here, 4.8%. No other category saw prices drop across the nation, but in the Miami area costs of dairy and related products dropped 1.8% for the year, fruit and vegetable costs dropped 1.4%, recreation costs dipped 1.5%, and new car costs edged down a tenth of a percent. Figures year to year might not be exactly comparable: because of the federal shutdown, data for 2025 weren’t available for October or the first half of November.

EXPANDING E-VERIFY: The Florida House passed a bill that would require all private employers to use the federal E-Verify system to check the immigration status of new workers. The bill would expand a current law that requires public employers and private employers with 25 or more workers to use E-Verify. The bill passed 80-37.

DEVELOPERS FORUM: A developers forum presented by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce will offer panels on the impact of public-private partnerships on South Florida’s real estate market as well as on the real estate vision in Miami’s Freedom Park, which is now rising. The forum is being held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 22 on the 19th floor of Panorama Tower, 1100 Brickell Bay Drive. Heather Jonczak, a Carlton Fields shareholder, will moderate the public-private partnerships session. Jose Gonzalez, president of GLC Real Estate, will moderate the forum on Freedom Park.

HOMESTEAD RODEO: Three days of rodeos and other events will mark the 77th year of the Homestead Championship Rodeo at the Harris Field Pavilion, 1034 NE Eighth St. in Homestead. Tickets and details are at www.homesteadrodeo.com

GAS PRICES RISE: Average gas prices in Miami rose 9 cents per gallon in the past week to $2.81, according to GasBuddy. Prices in Miami are 11.5 cents lower than a month ago and 35 cents lower than a year ago.
