Board of Trustees\u00a0Chairman\u00a0Peter Collins, a two-time FSU\u00a0alumnus, reflected on his time as a member of the FSU family during his remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve walked on a lot of campuses, and when I walk on FSU\u2019s campus, it\u2019s just different,\u201d Collins said. \u201cWe have a different ethos, a different vibe across campus, and I wouldn\u2019t trade it for anything. We\u2019re changing Florida State a lot, but the core of Florida State is going to stay the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many students participated by signing a wall labeled \u201cWhat makes you proud to be a Nole?\u201d Their responses varied widely, mentioning family, community, campus traditions, and even the famous campus cats.<\/p>\n

Kennedy Wharton, a Dedman College of Hospitality student and Marching Chiefs member, noted how special the celebration was for her as a legacy student.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so special to be a part of something as big as the 175th birthday of our school,\u201d Wharton said. \u201cBoth of my parents went here, and they were both on the Marching Chiefs, where my sister and I now carry on that legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gracey\u00a0Messingschlager, a student\u00a0in\u00a0the College of Arts and Sciences,\u00a0was\u00a0excited to\u00a0participate\u00a0in the celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI walked out of class and saw all the amazing things going on like cupcakes, shirts and custom buttons,\u201d Messingschlager said. \u201cAll of my cousins attended FSU, so I have a family legacy here, and it is crazy to see the differences from then to now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evan\u00a0Eisenstark, a social media specialist in the Division of Student Affairs,\u00a0said\u00a0the\u00a0celebration reminded\u00a0him\u00a0of where we began as a university.<\/p>\n

\u201cHitting 175 is such a big milestone,\u201d\u00a0Eisenstark\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cBeing able to see our history in person is amazing, and you get to see the growth that constantly happens. One of my favorite things is to look at old photos and see what used to be here and what has stayed the same throughout those 175 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ceremony ended with the university community joining the band to sing \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d to Florida State, marking the official start of the yearlong festivities.<\/p>\n
