In St. Petersburg, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s legacy is no longer confined to a single parade or one Monday in January. In 2026, the City and community partners are expanding that tradition into something much bigger. The inaugural 45 Days of Excellence<\/a> transforms MLK Day into a month-and-a-half-long movement, running through January and February, built around service and collective action.<\/p>\n

If Dr. King\u2019s dream was rooted in justice, opportunity, and the beloved community, then living that dream means showing up consistently. Over 45 days, dozens of locally led projects will activate neighborhoods across St. Pete, offering residents tangible ways to connect, heal, learn, and build together.<\/p>\n

Honoring excellence in the community<\/p>\n

At the center of the initiative is a recognition of individuals who have shaped St. Petersburg through leadership, service, and advocacy. This year\u2019s nominees include Bill Darling, Thomas \u201cJet\u201d Jackson, Joseph E. Savage, James E. Feazell Sr., Dr. Byron Green, and Rev. Dr. Kennedy F. Irby. Their collective impact reflects the many ways excellence shows up in this city, through education, faith, culture, activism, and long-standing commitment to community uplift.<\/p>\n

Their recognition sets the tone for the weeks that follow, reminding participants that the work being done today stands on the shoulders of those who have been quietly and consistently building St. Pete for decades.<\/p>\n

Community in action, one project at a time<\/p>\n

Throughout January, the 45 Days of Excellence calendar comes alive with projects designed and led by local organizations. Youth and families are equally centered. The Dream Builders Youth Expo at the Enoch Davis Center blends mentorship and self-expression, while environmental and service-based efforts like Grow Or Die Corp\u2019s neighborhood cleanup and Clothesline Coin Laundry\u2019s \u201cLoads of Love\u201d bring care directly into the community.<\/p>\n

As January continues, the focus widens. Free dental care, STEM mentorship, jazz and storytelling, rain garden workshops, and financial literacy lunches all reflect Dr. King\u2019s belief that justice is inseparable from access, health, and education. Each project meets a real need while strengthening relationships across neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

The Work Continues Into February<\/p>\n

Rather than slowing down after MLK Weekend, 45 Days of Excellence intentionally carries its momentum into February. Ongoing initiatives support youth mentorship, intergenerational storytelling, urban gardening, free produce access, and creative expression. Community members are invited to write their dreams for the city, grow food together, shape art with their hands, and take part in wellness programs that emphasize both individual healing and collective responsibility.<\/p>\n

February events continue to center health and connection, with community wellness festivals, film-based dialogue for boys and men, senior-focused nutrition and engagement programs, parenting support, and beauty and wellness pop-ups that spotlight local entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

In the spirit of Dr. King\u2019s dream, 45 Days of Excellence asks a question of the city: what does it look like when we show up for each other, not just for a day, but again and again?<\/p>\n
