{"id":128496,"date":"2026-01-23T00:24:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T00:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/128496\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T00:24:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T00:24:24","slug":"florida-am-university-history-on-display-in-new-smithsonian-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/128496\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida A&#038;M University History on Display in New Smithsonian Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Artifacts from the Florida A&amp;M University (FAMU) Meek-Eaton Black Archives are prominently featured in a powerful new exhibition at the Smithsonian&#8217;s National<br \/>\n                        Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), celebrating the legacy of<br \/>\n                        historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). &#8220;At the Vanguard: Making and<br \/>\n                        Saving History at HBCUs&#8221; spotlights the groundbreaking collections from five HBCU<br \/>\n                        museums now through July 19 before embarking on a national tour that will include<br \/>\n                        a stop at FAMU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This moment affirms the enduring mission of the Meek-Eaton Black Archives and the<br \/>\n                        collective work behind it,&#8221; said Director Timothy Barber. &#8220;I am grateful to our dedicated staff and student scholars whose stewardship made<br \/>\n                        this exhibit possible, and to the visionary legacy of our founder, Dr. James N. Eaton.<br \/>\n                        With the support of our President Marva B. Nearly<br \/>\n                              two-thirds of HBCUs house museums, art galleries or archives. This traveling exhibition<br \/>\n                              draws from five institutions, highlighting their deep collections and roles in cultivating<br \/>\n                              future artists, museum professionals and scholars. &#8220;At the Vanguard&#8221; presents a remarkable<br \/>\n                              selection of artifacts, artwork, historical documents and multimedia from FAMU, Clark<br \/>\n                              Atlanta University, Jackson State University, Texas Southern University and Tuskegee<br \/>\n                              University\u2014five HBCUs with distinguished archives and museum collections.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1024x768_SmithsonianPresidents.gif\" alt=\"PMJ with presidents from participating institutions\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"\/>President Marva B. Johnson pictured with HBCU presidents from participating institutions.<br \/>\n                                 (Photo special to FAMU)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we celebrate America&#8217;s 250th anniversary, the Smithsonian&#8217;s &#8216;At the Vanguard&#8217;<br \/>\n                        exhibition highlights the profound contributions of HBCUs to our nation&#8217;s progress\u2014in<br \/>\n                        education, innovation, and preparing generations of leaders,&#8221; said President Marva B. Johnson, J.D. &#8220;Florida A&amp;M University is honored to share our story on this global stage. This<br \/>\n                        exhibition reminds our students that they stand on the shoulders of those who transformed<br \/>\n                        opportunity into excellence, and it calls them to carry that legacy forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>FAMU&#8217;s history as a land-grant institution is spotlighted through the display of a<br \/>\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/explore\/stories\/vanguard#FAMU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vegetable gardening extension<\/a> program brochure. The FAMU Cooperative Extension Tractor Clinic played a critical<br \/>\n                        role in equipping farmers, home gardeners, and rural communities with the knowledge<br \/>\n                        and resources to thrive. Other artifacts on display include a West African ngoni instrument,<br \/>\n                        a FAMU Marching 100 drum major&#8217;s shako hat, a nursing student uniform, and several<br \/>\n                        historical photographs of student life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This exhibition honors the legacy of HBCUs as cultural and educational powerhouses,&#8221;<br \/>\n                        said Shanita Brackett, acting director for NMAAHC. &#8220;Through these collections from our partner institutions, we see the breadth of<br \/>\n                        Black intellectual excellence, activism and artistic achievement, reinforcing the<br \/>\n                        vital role HBCUs play in shaping American history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the Vanguard&#8221; is a collaboration between the National Museum of African American<br \/>\n                        History and Culture and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.<br \/>\n                        It is part of the museum&#8217;s HBCU History and Culture Access Consortium initiative,<br \/>\n                        which was made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and a<br \/>\n                        bequest from Dr. Beryl Carter Rice.
