{"id":129093,"date":"2026-01-23T12:41:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T12:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/129093\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T12:41:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T12:41:13","slug":"florida-senate-revives-effort-to-end-onerous-public-school-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/129093\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Senate revives effort to end \u2018onerous\u2019 public school regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The big story: The Florida Senate is continuing its push to eliminate what leaders have called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2023\/02\/10\/florida-senate-bill-calls-reduced-regulations-public-schools\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201conerous codes\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201conerous codes\u201d<\/a> regulating the state\u2019s public schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The upper chamber on Thursday unanimously approved legislation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/320\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SB 320;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">SB 320<\/a>) that would remove parts of the inches-thick education code that Senate President Ben Albritton suggested stand in the way of traditional district schools competing on an equal footing with the many other education options that lawmakers have expanded in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s time to take the shackles off, Albritton said, holding his wrists together to illustrate, and \u201cnot get bound around the axle by a bunch of incremental things that at the end of the day may not make that much of a difference anyhow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The measure, sponsored by Education PreK-12 Committee chairperson Sen. Corey Simon, R-Tallahassee, includes provisions that would allow high-performing teachers to have multiyear contracts, simplify local testing calendars, give districts more flexibility in how they use revenue from their capital projects tax, and relax long-term planning requirements, among other subjects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFor the past few years, we have tried to carve back some of the many, many regulations we have put on district schools,\u201d Simon said. \u201cThe focus should be on our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He expressed confidence that an identical measure in the House (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/963\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:HB 963;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">HB 963<\/a>) would have better luck than last year, when the lower chamber did not take up the Senate initiative. Simon said he removed some of the more contentious items, such as eliminating high school graduation testing requirements, to generate more backing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s the second time in two weeks that the Senate has laid its cards on the table with regard to what observers consider key education issues that could take all session to resolve. In one of its first acts as a full body, the Senate adopted legislation to reform school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2026\/01\/15\/senate-oks-fixes-floridas-school-voucher-funding-model\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:voucher funding;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">voucher funding<\/a>, something the House has signaled it supports in concept while also opposing some significant portions of the Senate proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The third pressing issue \u2014 co-location of Schools of Hope charter schools \u2014 hasn\u2019t yet been aired in either chamber, though bills have been filed. The Department of Education also has begun the process to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2026\/01\/12\/florida-prepares-revisions-schools-hope-co-location-rules\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:revise the current rules;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">revise the current rules<\/a> amid complaints coming from across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Education lobbyists said they\u2019re expecting committee bills to emerge in the next few weeks indicating just how far each body is willing to go on the three topics, any of which could become a bargaining chip as priorities get set and swapped.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/69f2287652f6c8b27d2a1d0a6489f3f0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Campus Rays stadium: State Sen.
